Ukraine Faces Deepening Power Shortages After Russian Strikes

A resident shows a journalist where a Russian drone struck the roof of an apartment building, depriving its residents of water, heat and electricity, in Kyiv. Ukraine is confronting one of its most severe energy shortfalls since the start of the full‑scale invasion, with the country currently able to supply only about 60% of its electricity needs. A new wave of Russian missile and drone attacks has heavily damaged power plants and transmission infrastructure across multiple regions, pushing the grid to the brink. Officials report that nearly every major power‑generating facility has been hit in recent weeks. Cities such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, and Dnipro have experienced rolling blackouts, leaving millions of residents coping with limited heating, lighting, and communications during the winter season. Ukraine’s government has warned that the situation remains extremely challenging. Engineers are working around the clock to repair damaged facilities, but repeated strikes have slowed...

Gaza Aid Crisis Deepens as Israeli Fire Kills Civilians; U.S. Envoy Meets Hostage Families

The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza escalated Saturday as Israeli gunfire killed at least 18 Palestinians, including eight aid-seekers near distribution sites operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The violence unfolded amid growing desperation for food and medical aid in the besieged enclave, where over 2 million Palestinians face what experts call a “worst-case scenario of famine”.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes near the Netzarim corridor, where crowds gathered in hopes of receiving aid. “It’s the same daily episode,” said Yahia Youssef, who helped carry wounded civilians from the site. Despite claims by GHF and Israeli forces that only warning shots were fired, health officials reported multiple fatalities and dozens of injuries.

The deadly incident coincided with a visit by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, who met with families of Israeli hostages held by Hamas since October 2023. Witkoff assured relatives that the U.S. and Israeli governments were working on a “very, very good plan” to end the war and reconstruct Gaza. However, many families expressed frustration, saying the meeting left them with more questions than answers.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. According to the UN, over 1,300 Palestinians have been killed while seeking aid since May. Aid drops have proven insufficient, with many packets damaged on impact and stolen by armed gangs. Seven more Palestinians, including a child, died of starvation in the past 24 hours.

As international outrage mounts, calls for a ceasefire grow louder. Yet, both Israel and Hamas remain entrenched in their positions, with Hamas refusing to disarm without the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.
