Markets Rebound as Hopes for Iran–U.S. Dialogue Ease Geopolitical Tensions

U.S. stock futures edged higher on Wednesday as signs of potential diplomatic movement in the Iran–U.S. standoff helped calm volatile markets. Futures tied to the S&P 500 rose about 0.3%, the Nasdaq 100 gained 0.5%, and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures added 0.2% after a turbulent prior session.  The shift in sentiment followed reports that Iran has quietly approached the United States to discuss terms for ending the escalating conflict , a development that helped cool fears of further disruption in global energy markets. This diplomatic signal contributed to a rebound after Tuesday’s sharp sell-off, when concerns over widening conflict and rising oil prices rattled investors.  The conflict, now in its fifth day, has seen continued strikes and mounting casualties, adding to market unease. Gaza Aid Crisis Deepens as Israeli Fire Kills Civilians; U.S. Envoy Meets Hostage Families

The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza escalated Saturday as Israeli gunfire killed at least 18 Palestinians, including eight aid-seekers near distribution sites operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The violence unfolded amid growing desperation for food and medical aid in the besieged enclave, where over 2 million Palestinians face what experts call a “worst-case scenario of famine”.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes near the Netzarim corridor, where crowds gathered in hopes of receiving aid. “It’s the same daily episode,” said Yahia Youssef, who helped carry wounded civilians from the site. Despite claims by GHF and Israeli forces that only warning shots were fired, health officials reported multiple fatalities and dozens of injuries.

The deadly incident coincided with a visit by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, who met with families of Israeli hostages held by Hamas since October 2023. Witkoff assured relatives that the U.S. and Israeli governments were working on a “very, very good plan” to end the war and reconstruct Gaza. However, many families expressed frustration, saying the meeting left them with more questions than answers.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. According to the UN, over 1,300 Palestinians have been killed while seeking aid since May. Aid drops have proven insufficient, with many packets damaged on impact and stolen by armed gangs. Seven more Palestinians, including a child, died of starvation in the past 24 hours.

As international outrage mounts, calls for a ceasefire grow louder. Yet, both Israel and Hamas remain entrenched in their positions, with Hamas refusing to disarm without the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.
