Canada's Rent Slide Is Finally Stalling — What It Means If You Rent or Rent Out

Published August 13, 2026 For nearly two years, "Canadian rents are falling" has been one of the safest headlines in personal finance. Germany Halts Military Exports to Israel Amid Gaza Offensive Escalation

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the government believes an expansion of military action in the Gaza Strip makes it more difficult to see how the goals of disarming Hamas and releasing the hostages can be achieved.

In a dramatic shift in foreign policy, Germany has suspended all military exports to Israel that could be used in Gaza, following Israel’s approval of a plan to seize control of Gaza City. Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the decision Friday, citing deep concern over the humanitarian crisis and questioning the effectiveness of Israel’s intensified military strategy in achieving its stated goals of disarming Hamas and securing hostage releases.

Germany, historically one of Israel’s staunchest allies and its second-largest arms supplier after the United States, had approved €485 million in military exports to Israel since the war began in October 2023. The freeze affects new export approvals and may also impact pending deliveries if they are deemed usable in Gaza.

Merz emphasized Israel’s right to self-defense but warned that the planned offensive places even greater responsibility on Israel to ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilians. He urged full access for UN and NGO aid organizations and called on Israel to avoid further steps toward annexing the West Bank.
