Hamas has denounced Israel’s newly announced plan to relocate residents from Gaza City to the southern part of the enclave, calling it a “new wave of genocide and displacement” for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

The Israeli military says it will begin distributing tents and other shelter equipment to facilitate the evacuation of civilians from combat zones “to ensure their safety” ahead of a planned offensive to seize control of northern Gaza City. The move has sparked alarm from the United Nations and humanitarian groups, who warn that no area in Gaza can be considered safe and that the relocation could deepen the already catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

Israel’s government maintains the plan is a protective measure, but critics — including international leaders and aid organizations — argue it risks weaponizing humanitarian aid and forcing mass displacement under the guise of safety. The war, now in its 22nd month, has already killed tens of thousands in Gaza and displaced most of its population, with the UN reporting record levels of hunger and malnutrition.

Hamas insists the relocation plan is a cover for further military aggression, while Israel frames it as a necessary step before intensifying operations against the group’s remaining strongholds in Gaza City.
