Hezbollah Threatens Civil Unrest Over Lebanese Disarmament Plan

Lebanon’s political crisis deepened on Friday as Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Naim Qassem, warned that the country would “have no life” if the government moved forward with a U.S.-backed plan to disarm the Iran-aligned group. The Lebanese cabinet recently tasked the army with ensuring that only state security forces hold weapons — a move Hezbollah denounced as an “American-Israeli order” aimed at eliminating the resistance.

Qassem’s televised remarks carried an implicit threat of civil war, echoing fears of renewed sectarian conflict. He insisted Hezbollah would not surrender its arsenal while Israel continues military strikes and occupies parts of southern Lebanon. Although the group and its Shi’ite ally, the Amal movement, have delayed street protests to allow for dialogue, Qassem warned that confrontation would trigger nationwide demonstrations, potentially reaching the U.S. embassy in Beirut.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the comments as unacceptable, reaffirming that no party in Lebanon is authorized to bear arms outside the state’s authority. The standoff comes amid heightened tensions following years of conflict with Israel, which has significantly weakened Hezbollah’s military capabilities.
