Historic Floods Ravage Pakistan’s Punjab, Forcing Mass Evacuations

Local residents cross a stream following Friday's flash flooding hit area in Pishoreen village in Buner district, in Pakistan's northwest.

Heavy monsoon rains and the release of water from overflowing dams in neighboring India have triggered Pakistan’s worst flood emergency in decades, displacing nearly 250,000 people and affecting about 1.2 million across Punjab province.

For the first time in 38 years, the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers have simultaneously reached high flood levels, inundating 1,432 villages and destroying crops, homes, and businesses. Rescue teams in boats are racing to reach stranded families, while nearly 700 relief camps and 265 medical centers have been set up to provide food, shelter, and healthcare to those impacted.

At least 15 people were killed in Gujranwala district and surrounding areas, adding to a nationwide toll of more than 800 flood-related deaths since late June. Officials warn that more rain is expected in the coming days, raising fears of further devastation.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif credited timely evacuations and the removal of illegal structures along waterways with preventing greater loss of life, but many residents say they are still waiting for government assistance.

The disaster has left thousands homeless, with families recounting harrowing escapes as floodwaters swept away possessions, livelihoods, and in some cases, wedding dowries prepared for upcoming ceremonies.
