Israel Declares Gaza City a Combat Zone, Halts Humanitarian Pauses Amid Escalating Offensive
Israel’s military has suspended its daily “tactical pauses” in Gaza City, ending the midday windows that had allowed humanitarian aid to enter the besieged area. Officials described the city as a “dangerous combat zone” as tens of thousands of troops mobilised for what they called the initial stages of a major offensive.
The pauses, previously in place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., also applied to Deir al-Balah and Muwasi, where hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians have been sheltering. Aid agencies warn that the suspension will further restrict access to food, water, and medical supplies in a city already facing famine conditions.
Israel has long described Gaza City as a Hamas stronghold, citing an extensive tunnel network beneath its streets. The United Nations has cautioned that a full-scale invasion could cut the territory’s hospital bed capacity in half, deepening the humanitarian crisis.
The move comes amid intensified air and ground strikes, with residents reporting relentless bombardment in several neighbourhoods. Humanitarian groups say the escalation will make aid delivery “nearly impossible” and could displace up to one million more people.
