5 Things to Know Today – June 9, 2026

Here are the five stories shaping your money today — from tomorrow's pivotal Bank of Canada decision to a looming trade deadline that could affect every Canadian business. 1. 🏦 Bank of Canada Decides Tomorrow — Hold Expected, But It's Not Simple All eyes are on Ottawa as the Bank of Canada announces its overnight rate decision on Wednesday, June 10 at 9:45 a.m. ET. The benchmark rate currently sits at 2.25%, and a hold is the widely expected outcome. But experts say it's the most uncertain call in months. Canada's economy has slipped into a technical recession — Q1 2026 GDP contracted at an annualized rate of -0.1%, following a downward revision to Q4 2025 (-1.0%). Israel Intensifies Strikes on Gaza City Outskirts as Full Offensive Looms

Smoke rises following an Israeli strike in Gaza City on 24 August.

Israeli forces have escalated bombardments on the outskirts of Gaza City, targeting neighborhoods such as Zeitoun, Shejaia, and Sabra, in what officials describe as preparatory moves for a larger ground offensive. Witnesses reported relentless overnight explosions, with tanks shelling homes and roads, and airstrikes leveling buildings in multiple districts.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has approved a plan to seize control of Gaza City, a move expected to begin in the coming weeks. The Israel Defense Forces say the operation aims to dismantle Hamas’ remaining strongholds and prevent militants from re-establishing positions in cleared areas.

The intensified military activity comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis. According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, hundreds have died from malnutrition and starvation since the war began, with famine now officially declared in Gaza City and surrounding areas. Around half of Gaza’s two million residents remain in the city, many facing acute shortages of food, water, and shelter.

International mediators in Egypt and Qatar are attempting to revive ceasefire talks, but Israel’s leadership has vowed to continue military operations unless all hostages are released and Hamas agrees to end the conflict on Israel’s terms.
