Israel is reviewing Hamas’ formal reply to a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal that could pause the Gaza war for 60 days and see the release of half the remaining Israeli hostages. The plan, shaped by Egyptian and Qatari mediation, calls for the exchange of 10 living and 18 deceased hostages for 200 Palestinian prisoners, alongside a partial Israeli troop withdrawal and increased humanitarian aid into the enclave.

Hamas has reportedly accepted the proposal without amendments, framing it as an interim step toward ending the conflict. The move comes as Israel prepares a new offensive in Gaza City, sparking international concern over civilian safety and prompting mass protests in Tel Aviv demanding a deal.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces competing pressures — from far-right ministers opposing any truce, to hostage families urging swift action. While mediators describe the plan as “workable,” officials caution that significant gaps remain before an agreement can be finalized.

On the ground, fighting continues, with Israeli strikes killing at least 20 Palestinians on Tuesday, underscoring the fragile nature of the talks.
