End of U.S. Duty-Free Rule Sparks Cross-Border Commerce Shake-Up

Cal Green, the owner of Ottawa streetwear label Raised by Wolves, says he is pivoting his business toward Canadian customers as the United States eliminates duty free shipping for low-value packages. Canadian small businesses are bracing for a major blow as the United States ends its long-standing de minimis exemption this Friday, removing duty-free entry for shipments valued under US$800. The change, enacted by executive order, means all goods entering the U.S. will now face applicable duties and require full customs documentation. Kyiv Reels from One of War’s Largest Air Assaults as 15 Killed in Overnight Barrage

An apartment building in Kyiv that was hit by a Russian missile.

In the early hours of Thursday, Russia unleashed one of its most intense aerial assaults on Ukraine’s capital since the start of the full-scale invasion, killing at least 15 people — including four children — and injuring 48. The attack, which struck both central and residential districts of Kyiv, involved 598 drones and decoys alongside 31 missiles launched nationwide. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted the majority, but nearly 100 buildings were damaged, including a shopping mall, homes, and the European Union’s diplomatic mission.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes as proof that Moscow is “choosing ballistics instead of the negotiating table” and urged the international community to respond with stronger sanctions. Emergency crews worked through the morning to rescue survivors from collapsed buildings, while residents cleared shattered glass from streets littered with debris.

The assault marks a rare direct hit on Kyiv’s city center and underscores the escalating intensity of Russia’s long-range attacks, even as global peace efforts struggle to gain traction.
