Ukraine Faces Deepening Power Shortages After Russian Strikes

A resident shows a journalist where a Russian drone struck the roof of an apartment building, depriving its residents of water, heat and electricity, in Kyiv. Ukraine is confronting one of its most severe energy shortfalls since the start of the full‑scale invasion, with the country currently able to supply only about 60% of its electricity needs. A new wave of Russian missile and drone attacks has heavily damaged power plants and transmission infrastructure across multiple regions, pushing the grid to the brink. Kyiv Reels from One of War’s Largest Air Assaults as 15 Killed in Overnight Barrage

An apartment building in Kyiv that was hit by a Russian missile.

In the early hours of Thursday, Russia unleashed one of its most intense aerial assaults on Ukraine’s capital since the start of the full-scale invasion, killing at least 15 people — including four children — and injuring 48. The attack, which struck both central and residential districts of Kyiv, involved 598 drones and decoys alongside 31 missiles launched nationwide. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted the majority, but nearly 100 buildings were damaged, including a shopping mall, homes, and the European Union’s diplomatic mission.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes as proof that Moscow is “choosing ballistics instead of the negotiating table” and urged the international community to respond with stronger sanctions. Emergency crews worked through the morning to rescue survivors from collapsed buildings, while residents cleared shattered glass from streets littered with debris.

The assault marks a rare direct hit on Kyiv’s city center and underscores the escalating intensity of Russia’s long-range attacks, even as global peace efforts struggle to gain traction.
