A woman walks past a digital screen displaying news of US-Iran peace talks along a road in Islamabad on April 10, 2026 The United States has warned it will step up economic pressure on Iran while mediators race to arrange a second round of ceasefire talks before the fragile truce expires on April 22, 2026 — a standoff that risks higher oil prices, tighter global markets, and direct costs for Canadian households and investors.   Background and diplomatic timeline A two‑week ceasefire that paused nearly seven weeks of fighting was brokered to create a narrow diplomatic window for talks between Washington and Tehran. Long Lake Wildfire Forces Expanded Evacuations in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley

A water skimmer flies over the evacuation area for the Long Lake wildfire in Nova Scotia's Annapolis County, on Aug. 19.

An out-of-control wildfire in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis County has intensified, prompting officials to expand evacuation orders for the second time in a single day. The Long Lake blaze, which began on August 13, has now grown beyond its earlier estimate of 32 square kilometres, fueled by hot, dry, and windy conditions.

Residents along sections of Highway 10 in the West Dalhousie area, as well as parts of Morse Road and Thorne Road, have been told to leave immediately. Authorities have moved the wildfire command post to Bridgetown as a precaution, while more than 50 provincial firefighters, supported by crews from Ontario and local volunteers, battle the flames with aerial and ground resources.

Environment Canada has issued an air quality warning for Annapolis County due to heavy smoke. Officials say no homes have been lost so far, but structure protection measures are in place as the fire continues to advance.
