That would follow a much stronger May, when the economy added 88,000 jobs and the unemployment rate actually fell by 0.3 percentage points. Massacre in Darfur: RSF Assault Leaves 40 Dead in Displacement Camp

 

A brutal assault by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the Abu Shouk displacement camp near El-Fasher has left at least 40 civilians dead and 19 injured, according to local aid groups and activists.

The attack, which occurred Monday morning, targeted residents inside their homes and on the streets of the famine-stricken camp, which shelters over 450,000 displaced people. Eyewitnesses and emergency responders described scenes of indiscriminate gunfire and executions, with satellite imagery later confirming the presence of RSF vehicles in the camp’s northwest neighborhoods.

The RSF, locked in a civil war with the Sudanese Armed Forces since April 2023, has laid siege to El-Fasher—the last major city in Darfur under army control—since May 2024. The Abu Shouk camp, already suffering from acute malnutrition and famine, has been repeatedly attacked during the conflict.

Local resistance committees condemned the assault as a “horrific violation” against defenseless civilians. The RSF has faced international accusations of ethnic cleansing and genocide, particularly against non-Arab communities such as the Zaghawa and Fur, many of whom reside in Abu Shouk.

The Sudanese army claimed to have repelled a broader RSF offensive on El-Fasher the same day, destroying dozens of combat vehicles and capturing military equipment. However, the RSF countered with claims of territorial gains and seized weaponry.

This latest atrocity underscores the deepening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where over 40,000 people have been killed and 12 million displaced. With famine spreading and aid routes blocked, the situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate rapidly.
