Trilateral Summit Tackles Mediterranean Migration Crisis

In a high-stakes diplomatic summit held in Istanbul, the leaders of Turkey, Italy, and Libya convened to address the escalating challenges posed by irregular migration across the Mediterranean. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hosted Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah for what was described as a “Cooperation Summit” focused on migration, regional stability, and strategic collaboration.

Libya, a key departure point for migrants attempting to reach Europe, has seen a surge in crossings, prompting urgent calls for coordinated action. President Erdoğan emphasized the need for “long-term and sustainable solutions” and multilateral cooperation to stem the flow of irregular migration.

Prime Minister Meloni proposed initiatives targeting human trafficking networks and bolstering Libya’s border security. She reaffirmed Italy’s support for Libya’s sovereignty and a UN-backed political process aimed at national elections.

Prime Minister Dbeibah suggested expanding Libya’s regional role through a broader framework involving Turkey, Italy, and Qatar. His plan includes dismantling trafficking networks, enhancing intelligence sharing, and promoting economic integration across the Mediterranean.

Beyond migration, the summit also explored energy cooperation, infrastructure development, and maritime security. The leaders agreed to continue technical-level discussions and reconvene to evaluate progress made by their respective cooperation committees.
