Moscow Rejects Western Security Proposals for Ukraine as ‘One-Sided’ and Risky

Russia has sharply criticized Western-backed proposals for security guarantees to Ukraine, warning they could escalate tensions and draw NATO into direct confrontation with Moscow.

According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, the current framework under discussion by Ukraine’s European allies is “one-sided” and designed to “contain Russia”. She argued that the plans ignore Moscow’s security concerns and risk turning Kyiv into a “strategic provocateur” on Russia’s borders.

The proposals, which could form part of a future peace settlement, aim to shield Ukraine from renewed aggression. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he expects a framework to be ready soon. However, Moscow has reiterated its opposition to any NATO troop presence in Ukraine and insists that security arrangements must be based on “indivisible security” principles that include Russia’s participation.

The dispute underscores a deep divide over how to guarantee Ukraine’s safety while preventing further escalation — a gap that continues to complicate peace efforts.
