Thousands of Australians took to the streets in more than 40 cities and towns on Sunday, voicing strong support for Palestinians amid escalating tensions between Canberra and Tel Aviv.

Major demonstrations unfolded in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, with organisers claiming a combined turnout of around 350,000 people nationwide — though police offered lower estimates in some locations. Protesters waved Palestinian flags, chanted “Free, free Palestine,” and demanded the Australian government impose sanctions on Israel.

The rallies came less than two weeks after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government announced it would recognise a Palestinian state, a move welcomed by activists but sharply criticised by Israeli leaders. In Sydney, organiser Josh Lees said the protests aimed to “demand an end to this genocide in Gaza” and push for stronger political action.

Jewish community representatives expressed concern over the tone of the demonstrations, warning they risked creating unsafe environments.
