Nationwide Strike in Israel Amplifies Calls for Ceasefire and Hostage Release

Thousands of Israelis escalated their campaign for a ceasefire and the release of hostages held in Gaza, staging a rare nationwide strike that disrupted traffic, shuttered businesses, and drew crowds to streets across the country.

Organized by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, the protest came amid fears that Israel’s planned military push into Gaza City could endanger the roughly 50 hostages still believed to be in captivity — with only about 20 thought to be alive. Demonstrators chanted, “We don’t win a war over the bodies of hostages”, urging the government to strike a deal with Hamas.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted on the hostages’ immediate release but faces pressure from far-right coalition members who oppose any agreement that leaves Hamas in power. Hamas, meanwhile, has rejected Israel’s relocation plan for civilians in Gaza, demanding open humanitarian corridors and a halt to airstrikes before any aid is delivered to captives.

The strike unfolded as Israeli airstrikes targeted Houthi-linked sites in Yemen and preparations continued for a ground offensive in Gaza. Aid agencies warn that humanitarian conditions in the enclave remain dire, with shortages of food, shelter, and medical supplies worsening under the ongoing blockade.

The day’s events underscored the deepening divide between Israel’s military objectives and the growing public demand for a negotiated resolution to the nearly two-year conflict.
