Netanyahu Repeats Call for Palestinians to Leave Gaza as Ceasefire Talks Resume in Cairo

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his stance that Palestinians in Gaza should be allowed to leave the enclave, a position that has drawn sharp criticism from Arab leaders and much of the international community. Speaking to Israeli television, Netanyahu framed the proposal as “voluntary exit,” urging countries that claim to support Palestinians to “open their gates” rather than “lecture” Israel.

The comments come as Hamas’ chief negotiator, Khalil Al-Hayya, met Egyptian mediators in Cairo to discuss a potential ceasefire aimed at halting nearly two years of conflict. Talks are reportedly exploring a comprehensive truce that could see Hamas relinquish governance in Gaza and surrender its weapons, though the group insists it will not disarm before an Israeli withdrawal.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces intensified strikes on Gaza City ahead of a planned takeover, with heavy bombardments reported in the Zeitoun and Shejaia neighborhoods. Palestinian medics said dozens were killed in the past 24 hours, including civilians seeking aid.

International pressure for a ceasefire is mounting, with foreign ministers from 24 countries warning that Gaza’s humanitarian crisis has reached “unimaginable levels”. Despite this, Israeli officials suggest the military operation to re-seize Gaza City could begin within weeks, leaving the fate of the ceasefire talks uncertain.
