Qatar Pushes for Gaza Truce Amid Hamas Agreement, Israel Yet to Respond

Ahmed Al-Hajj carries the body of his daughter, Dana Al-Hajj, 13, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip, at Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2025.

Qatar has renewed calls for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza after confirming that Hamas has given a “positive response” to a proposal aimed at halting the nearly two-year conflict. The plan, closely mirroring a previous U.S.-backed framework, includes a 60-day truce, phased hostage releases, and increased humanitarian aid.

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari described the development as encouraging but cautioned that no breakthrough can be claimed until Israel formally replies. Israel’s leadership has maintained its stance that all hostages must be freed and Hamas disarmed before the war ends.

The urgency of the talks comes as Israeli forces prepare for expanded operations in densely populated areas, raising fears for civilians sheltering in so-called humanitarian zones. Gaza health officials reported dozens of deaths in the latest strikes, including entire families killed in their tents.

Mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and the United States are pressing both sides to finalize an agreement, warning that failure could deepen the humanitarian crisis.
