Market Jitters Return as Cooler CPI Surprises Wall Street

A softer‑than‑expected U.S. Consumer Price Index reading sent a ripple through financial markets today, creating an unusual dynamic: good news on inflation, but renewed pressure on major stock indexes. A Cooling CPI, but a Nervous Market The latest CPI report showed inflation easing more than economists anticipated. Under normal circumstances, that would be a welcome sign—suggesting the Federal Reserve may have more room to consider rate cuts later in the year. But markets don’t always behave logically in the moment. Today, the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq all slipped as investors reassessed what the data means for corporate earnings, interest‑rate expectations, and the broader economic outlook. Spain’s Wildfire Crisis Deepens: Second Firefighter Dies, Suspected Arsonist Arrested

A wildfire burns in the outskirts of Abejera de Tabara, Zamora, Spain

Spain is reeling from one of its most devastating wildfire seasons in two decades, with tragedy striking again as a second volunteer firefighter lost his life in the northern province of León. The victim, 37-year-old Jaime Aparicio, suffered severe burns over 85% of his body while battling flames near Nogarejas, just days after his colleague Abel Ramos, 35, died in similar circumstances.

Authorities have arrested a man in Zamora province accused of deliberately starting a blaze that scorched 4,000 hectares, as well as another suspect in Málaga linked to six earlier fires. In total, ten people have been detained since June on suspicion of arson, with dozens more under investigation. Convicted offenders face up to five years in prison and heavy fines.

The fires, intensified by one of Spain’s longest heatwaves on record, have already destroyed about 148,000 hectares this year — more than a quarter of all land burned in the EU in 2025. Nearly two dozen blazes continue to rage, forcing the evacuation of around 9,500 residents and prompting Spain to request international assistance, including water-bombing aircraft from France.

As communities mourn their losses, the nation’s firefighters remain on the front lines, battling both the flames and the human actions that may have sparked them.
