Why Interest Rates Matter for Canadians

Interest rates are the single most powerful lever in Canada's economy.  When the Bank of Canada adjusts its policy rate, the effects reach every household—from the cost of carrying a mortgage to the return on a savings account. With rates currently at 2.25% and significant uncertainty ahead, understanding how rates work has never been more important for your finances. What Is the Bank of Canada's Policy Rate? The Bank of Canada sets the overnight policy rate—the interest rate at which major banks lend money to each other. This rate serves as a benchmark that influences borrowing and lending costs across the entire economy. Supreme Court Mandates Stray Dog Relocation Amid Rabies Surge in Delhi

Some reports suggest there are as many as one million stray dogs in New Delhi

India’s Supreme Court has issued a sweeping directive for authorities in Delhi and its surrounding regions to relocate all stray dogs to shelters within eight weeks, following a troubling rise in rabies cases, particularly among children.

The court emphasized that public safety must take precedence over sentiment, stating that “infants and young children should not at any cost fall prey to rabies”. Delhi reportedly has up to one million stray dogs, and recent hospital data suggests nearly 2,000 dog bite incidents occur daily in the city.

Authorities have been instructed to begin by capturing 5,000 dogs from high-risk areas and transferring them to shelters equipped with staff and surveillance systems. The court also ordered the creation of a 24-hour helpline for reporting dog bites and mandated public awareness campaigns about anti-rabies vaccination sites.

While the move has been welcomed by some officials, animal welfare advocates have criticized the plan as impractical and inhumane. Conservationists argue that mass sterilization and vaccination are more effective long-term solutions than relocation.

The ruling marks a significant shift in India’s approach to managing its stray dog population, aiming to balance public health concerns with animal welfare.
