Tens of Thousands Evacuated in Pakistan After India’s Dam Water Release Warning

Pakistan has launched mass evacuations in its eastern Punjab province after India warned it would release excess water from overflowing dams into cross-border rivers. The alert, delivered through diplomatic channels, marks the first public contact between the two nations in months amid strained relations.

According to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority, more than 14,000 residents have been moved from Kasur and nearly 89,000 from Bahawalnagar, with additional evacuations underway in other vulnerable districts. Authorities have urged people to avoid rivers, streams, and low-lying areas as the Sutlej and Ravi rivers approach dangerous flood levels.

The warning comes as heavy monsoon rains continue to batter both countries, with Pakistan already recording over 800 flood-related deaths since late June. Officials fear the situation could worsen, threatening agricultural heartlands and displacing even more communities.

Relief camps have been set up, and emergency teams remain on high alert as the region braces for further rainfall and potential surges in river levels.
