Tens of Thousands on Alert as Wildfires Threaten Newfoundland and Labrador Communities

An escalating wildfire crisis has placed roughly 20,000 residents of Newfoundland and Labrador under evacuation alerts, with officials warning that conditions could change rapidly.

About 5,400 people in two neighbourhoods of St. John’s were told Tuesday to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice, joining approximately 15,000 residents in Paradise and Conception Bay South who received similar alerts earlier in the week.

The most pressing threat comes from the Paddy’s Pond wildfire, which has burned more than 200 hectares and sits dangerously close to the Trans-Canada Highway. Nine wildfires are currently active across the province, at least four of them classified as out of control.

Premier John Hogan has declared a regional state of emergency for parts of St. John’s, Paradise, and Conception Bay South, while the Canadian Armed Forces and coast guard assist with firefighting and supply delivery.

Officials urge residents in affected areas to keep emergency bags packed and to monitor official channels for updates, as hot, windy weather continues to fuel extreme fire risk.
