Tragedy in Toronto: Stray Bullet Claims Life of Sleeping Child

The family of Jahavi Roy identified him to CBC Toronto as the victim in Saturday's shooting.

An eight-year-old boy was fatally struck by a stray bullet while asleep in his bed early Saturday morning in Toronto’s North York neighborhood, prompting a citywide investigation and outpouring of grief.

Toronto police responded to gunfire near Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Drive around 12:30 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered the child, later identified as Jahvai Roy, had been shot inside his apartment. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

“He was in his home, the safest place that you can be — with your family, in bed — when he was struck by a stray bullet,” said Det.-Sgt. Jason Davis, calling the incident a “cowardly, disgusting act of violence”.

Two other apartment units were also hit by gunfire, though no additional injuries were reported. Police are seeking witnesses, especially a group seen near a playground at the time of the shooting.

Mayor Olivia Chow expressed her condolences and outrage, stating, “Gun violence must end in our city. The reckless and violent acts of a few hurt entire communities and leave tragedy in their wake”.

Investigators have yet to identify suspects and are urging anyone with information to contact Toronto police or Crime Stoppers.

This heartbreaking incident has reignited calls for stronger action against gun violence in Toronto.
