The GST/HST Credit Has a New Name — And It's Paying 25% More

Sunday, July 19, 2026 If you've relied on the quarterly GST/HST credit, that name is gone for good. Here's what replaced it, how much more it's worth, and whether you need to do anything to get it. As of this month, that program no longer exists under its old name. It's now the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) , and the federal government has permanently increased the payment by 25%, locked in for five years. Tragic Tour Bus Rollover in Upstate New York Leaves Five Dead, Dozens Injured

Multiple dead after tour bus rollover on New York highway

A summer trip from Niagara Falls to New York City turned deadly on Friday when a tour bus carrying 54 people lost control and rolled over on Interstate 90 near Pembroke, about 30 miles east of Buffalo.

According to New York State Police, the bus veered into the median at full speed before overcorrecting and flipping into a roadside ditch. No other vehicles were involved. Five passengers — none of them children — were killed, and every remaining passenger sustained some level of injury. Victims ranged in age from 1 to 74, with many ejected from the vehicle due to not wearing seatbelts.

Emergency crews, including multiple Mercy Flight helicopters, rushed to the scene. Hospitals across the region received patients, with several in critical condition. Most passengers were of Asian descent, including Chinese, Indian, and Filipino nationals.

Governor Kathy Hochul expressed condolences and confirmed her office is coordinating with state police and local officials to support rescue and recovery efforts. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, though mechanical failure and driver impairment have been ruled out.

The New York State Thruway was closed in both directions for hours, causing significant traffic delays during one of the final weekends of the summer travel season.
