Israel and Lebanon Agree to 10‑Day Ceasefire as Trump Announces Breakthrough

Israel and Lebanon Reach 10‑Day Ceasefire Following Trump Announcement Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10‑day ceasefire set to begin at 5 p.m. EST, according to U.S. President Donald Trump, who said the truce followed “excellent conversations” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.  The ceasefire comes after more than six weeks of intense fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran‑backed armed group operating in southern Lebanon. The conflict has resulted in over 2,000 deaths in Lebanon and displaced more than a million residents, while Israel has maintained a 10‑kilometre security zone in southern Lebanon. Trump stated that both leaders agreed to begin the truce to pursue peace, adding that he plans to invite them to the White House for the first direct talks between the two countries since 1983. Lebanese officials have welcomed the ceasefire, though Hezbollah has said its adherence depends on Israel halting all attacks....

Trump Deploys Nuclear Submarines Near Russia Amid Escalating Rhetoric

In a dramatic escalation of tensions between the United States and Russia, President Donald Trump announced Friday that he has ordered two nuclear submarines to be repositioned near Russian territory. The move comes in response to what Trump described as “foolish and inflammatory” threats from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Trump made the announcement via his Truth Social platform, stating:

“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”

Background of the Standoff
The diplomatic flare-up began earlier this week when Trump issued a 10-day ultimatum for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face sweeping tariffs, including penalties on nations purchasing Russian oil. Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, responded by reminding Trump of Russia’s Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities and accused the U.S. of playing a “game of ultimatums”.

Medvedev’s rhetoric has grown increasingly hawkish since the start of the war in Ukraine, often invoking nuclear threats and mocking Western leaders. While some critics dismiss him as a provocateur, others argue his statements reflect deeper sentiments within the Kremlin.

Strategic Implications
The exact location of the submarines remains undisclosed, and it’s unclear whether they are nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed. However, the deployment signals a significant shift in posture at a time when diplomatic channels between Washington and Moscow remain strained.

Trump has also dispatched special envoy Steve Witkoff to Russia to push for a ceasefire, but Moscow has shown no signs of complying with the deadline.

Global Reaction
The move has sparked concern among NATO allies and international observers, who fear that the exchange of threats could spiral into a broader conflict. Ukrainian officials have dismissed Medvedev’s comments as “very stupid,” while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned that even if Medvedev isn’t a key decision-maker, his words carry weight in the current climate.
