Italy Advances Tougher Measures on Migrant Arrivals

The proposal, backed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, is designed to curb irregular sea crossings by restricting access to Italian territorial waters. The draft law would allow officials to bar vessels from entering for up to 30 days, with the option to extend the measure to six months if national security or public order is deemed at risk. Trump Presses Zelensky to Consider Putin’s Land Demand in Push for Peace

Vladimir Putin told Donald Trump that he would end the war if Ukraine surrenders the Donetsk region to Russia.

In the wake of a high-profile summit in Alaska, U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to consider a deal with Russia that would involve ceding all of Donetsk to Moscow in exchange for a freeze on most front lines. According to sources familiar with the discussions, Russian President Vladimir Putin made the proposal directly to Trump, who then relayed it to Kyiv.

Trump argued that moving straight to a peace agreement—rather than a ceasefire—would be the fastest way to end the war, calling Russia “a very big power” and suggesting Ukraine “has to agree to it”. Zelensky, however, rejected the territorial concession, citing Ukraine’s constitutional prohibition on surrendering land.

European allies, while welcoming diplomatic efforts, have reiterated their commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and tightening sanctions on Russia. The proposal has sparked concern among some leaders that pressuring Kyiv into a land-for-peace deal could fracture allied unity and embolden Moscow’s long-term ambitions.

Zelensky is set to meet Trump in Washington on Monday, with European leaders expected to join the talks in hopes of finding common ground without compromising Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
