President Donald Trump announced Monday that he intends to sign an executive order aimed at ending the use of mail-in ballots and what he called “seriously controversial” voting machines ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump reiterated his long-standing opposition to mail-in voting, claiming without evidence that it enables widespread fraud. He also criticized voting machines as costly and unreliable, advocating instead for paper ballots with watermarks.

The move is expected to face significant legal challenges, as states traditionally control how elections are conducted. A similar order issued in March was partially blocked by a federal judge, who ruled that the president lacked authority to impose state election rules.

Democrats argue that mail-in voting expands access for elderly, disabled, and rural voters, and warn that eliminating it could disenfranchise millions. Trump, however, framed the proposal as a fight for “honesty” in elections, urging states to comply with federal directives.
