Trump Seeks Long-Term Extension of Federal Control Over D.C. Police

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he will ask Congress for a long-term extension of federal control over Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, a move he says is aimed at making the nation’s capital “crime-free”.

The current federal authority, invoked under the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, allows the president to take control of the city’s police for up to 30 days during a declared emergency. Trump’s takeover began earlier this week alongside the deployment of National Guard troops, but any extension beyond the 30-day limit requires a joint resolution from Congress.

Speaking at the Kennedy Center, Trump expressed confidence that Republicans would back the measure “almost unanimously” and hinted at broader plans, including a D.C.-specific crime bill, ending cashless bail, and city “beautification” projects such as road repairs, graffiti removal, and clearing homeless encampments.

While Trump argues the measures are necessary to combat crime, city data shows violent crime has been declining for over a year, with robberies down 28% and overall violent crime down 26% compared to last year. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has reiterated her call for statehood in response to the federal intervention.

The initial 30-day period of federal control is set to expire in early September unless Congress approves the extension.
