TSX Futures Ease After Record-Breaking Rally on Rate Cut Hopes
Canada’s main stock index is taking a breather in premarket trading after closing at an all-time high last week. Futures on the S&P/TSX Composite slipped about 0.26% early Monday, following Friday’s surge to 28,333.13 — a record close driven by optimism that the U.S. Federal Reserve could cut interest rates as soon as September.
The rally was fueled by Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s comments at the Jackson Hole symposium, where he acknowledged rising risks to the job market while keeping inflation concerns in view. Major brokerages, including Barclays and Deutsche Bank, now expect a 25-basis-point cut next month.
Oil prices steadied amid concerns over potential Russian supply disruptions, while gold eased from a two-week high as the U.S. dollar strengthened. Investors are now eyeing key economic data this week, including Canada’s second-quarter GDP and U.S. tech earnings from Nvidia, which could influence market momentum.
