U.S. Targets ICC Officials in Escalating Dispute Over War Crimes Probes

The United States has imposed sanctions on four senior officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC), intensifying its long-running clash with the tribunal over investigations involving U.S. and Israeli nationals.

Those sanctioned include Canadian judge Kimberly Prost, cited for authorizing an ICC investigation into alleged war crimes by U.S. personnel in Afghanistan. French judge Nicolas Yann Guillou, who approved arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over the Gaza conflict, was also targeted.

Two deputy prosecutors — Nazhat Shameem Khan of Fiji and Mame Mandiaye Niang of Senegal — face sanctions for supporting the Gaza-related warrants. The measures freeze any U.S.-based assets and restrict financial transactions, with Washington accusing the ICC of “politicization” and “illegitimate judicial overreach”.

The ICC condemned the move as an attack on judicial independence, while Israel welcomed the decision. The sanctions mark a renewed hardline approach by the Trump administration, which has long rejected the court’s jurisdiction over non-member states.
