Autumn Equinox Arrives Monday: Shorter Days, Colder Nights Ahead

The Northern Hemisphere will officially welcome fall on Monday, September 22 at 2:19 p.m. EDT, marking the autumnal equinox. As the season shifts, here are three key changes to expect:

  • Daylight Shrinks Fast – From the first day of fall to the winter solstice, daylight hours will drop from about 12 hours 8 minutes to just 9 hours 27 minutes, making mornings and evenings noticeably darker.

  • Clocks Fall Back – Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 2, when clocks are set back one hour in most of Canada. The change can affect mood and energy levels due to reduced sunlight exposure.

  • Temperatures Tumble – Average daytime highs will plunge as winter nears. Edmonton could see a 22°C drop by late December, Toronto nearly 20°C, and Halifax about 17°C.

The seasonal shift is a reminder to prepare for colder weather, shorter days, and the long march toward winter.
