Canadian Soldier Found Dead in Latvia After Four-Day Search

Warrant Officer Geroge Hohl was found dead on Sept. 5, 2025.

A Canadian Armed Forces member who went missing in Latvia earlier this week has been found dead, the Department of National Defence has confirmed.

Warrant Officer George Hohl, a 20-year veteran and vehicle technician with the 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron based in Edmonton, was deployed on Operation REASSURANCE as part of NATO’s Multinational Brigade-Latvia. He was last seen on September 2, 2025, in the city of Ä€daži and was located deceased on September 5.

Canadian Forces Military Police are assisting Latvian authorities in investigating the circumstances of his death. Officials have stated there is no indication the incident poses an increased threat to the safety and security of deployed personnel.

General Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff, described the loss as devastating, noting that Hohl’s two decades of service included multiple deployments both at home and abroad.

Operation REASSURANCE is Canada’s largest overseas mission, involving approximately 2,200 personnel in the Baltic region to bolster NATO’s presence and deter potential threats in Eastern Europe.
