5 Things to Know Today: Your Canadian Money Brief

Wednesday, April 29, 2026 | moneysavings.ca/canadian-money-brief 1. The Bank of Canada Is Watching — And So Should You Markets are closely parsing every signal from the Bank of Canada ahead of its next rate announcement. With inflation holding stubbornly above target in key categories like shelter and groceries, economists are split on whether another cut is on the table or a longer hold is in store. If you're carrying variable-rate debt or sitting on a GIC renewal, now is the time to model both scenarios. What to do: Don't lock into a long-term rate product until after the next announcement. A few days of patience could save you thousands. 2. Spring Housing Market: More Listings, Less Panic After years of near-empty inventory, more Canadian sellers are finally listing — particularly in the Greater Toronto Area and Greater Vancouver. Child Dies in Latest English Channel Tragedy Amid Rising Migrant Deaths

Almost 900 migrants are thought to have crossed the Channel on Saturday

A child has died after falling from an overcrowded small boat attempting to cross the English Channel, French authorities confirmed on Sunday. The incident occurred when nearly 100 migrants were packed onto a dinghy, which later continued its journey toward Britain despite the tragedy. The child’s body was later found washed up on Écault beach near Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Emergency services reported that 48 other migrants fell into the sea but were rescued before the vessel carried on with around 50 passengers still onboard. The victim’s age and nationality have not yet been determined, though local sources suggested the child may have been a teenager.

This death follows the loss of two Somali women just a day earlier in a separate Channel crossing attempt, highlighting the growing dangers faced by migrants making the perilous journey. French prosecutors have launched investigations into the weekend’s fatalities, with authorities vowing to intensify efforts against people-smuggling networks.

So far in 2025, at least 21 people have died attempting to reach Britain by small boat, underscoring the human cost of the ongoing migration crisis.
