Deadly Clashes in Kathmandu as Police Fire on Anti-Social Media Ban Protesters
At least 11 people were killed and dozens wounded on Monday when police in Nepal’s capital opened fire on protesters rallying against a government ban on major social media platforms.
The violence erupted outside the Parliament building in Kathmandu, where tens of thousands — many from the so-called “Gen Z” generation — gathered to denounce the blocking of Facebook, X, YouTube, and other unregistered platforms. Authorities say the ban is aimed at enforcing registration and oversight, but critics call it a thinly veiled attempt at censorship and silencing dissent.
Protesters breached barricades, forcing riot police to retreat. Officers initially used tear gas and water cannons, but as the crowd surged toward the Parliament complex, live rounds were fired. Hospitals across the city reported treating dozens of people, many with gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
The government has imposed a curfew around key government sites, while rights groups have condemned the crackdown as a violation of free expression. Demonstrators vowed to continue their fight, chanting, “Stop the ban on social media, stop corruption, not social media.”
