U.S. Threatens Harsher Economic Pressure on Iran as Mediators Rush to Secure Second Ceasefire Talks

A woman walks past a digital screen displaying news of US-Iran peace talks along a road in Islamabad on April 10, 2026 The United States has warned it will step up economic pressure on Iran while mediators race to arrange a second round of ceasefire talks before the fragile truce expires on April 22, 2026 — a standoff that risks higher oil prices, tighter global markets, and direct costs for Canadian households and investors.   Background and diplomatic timeline A two‑week ceasefire that paused nearly seven weeks of fighting was brokered to create a narrow diplomatic window for talks between Washington and Tehran. Israel Launches Major Ground Offensive in Gaza City Amid Escalating Conflict

                                            Gaza City

The Israeli military has begun a large-scale ground operation in Gaza City, marking a significant escalation in its nearly two-year war with Hamas. Defense Minister Israel Katz declared that “Gaza is burning” as Israeli forces, supported by tanks and airstrikes, moved into the city’s outskirts with the stated aim of dismantling Hamas’ military infrastructure and securing the release of hostages.

The assault follows weeks of intensified bombardment that has reduced entire neighborhoods to rubble. Israel has urged civilians to evacuate south, but hundreds of thousands remain trapped, with the United Nations warning of a worsening humanitarian catastrophe. Local health officials report mounting casualties, including children, as hospitals struggle to cope with the influx of wounded.

The offensive, codenamed Operation Gideon’s Chariots II, involves tens of thousands of troops and is expected to expand deeper into the city in the coming days. The move comes as a UN Commission of Inquiry accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza — allegations Israel rejects as “false and distorted”.

International reaction has been swift, with the European Union and several Arab nations warning that the operation will exacerbate civilian suffering and hinder prospects for a ceasefire. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, visiting the region, acknowledged the risks but reiterated Washington’s support for Israel’s campaign against Hamas, while stressing that time for a negotiated settlement is running out.
