Israeli Forces Intensify Gaza City Offensive, Level High-Rise After Evacuation Orders

A mourner reacts during the funeral of Palestinians killed by Israeli fire while trying to receive aid on Friday, and others killed in overnight strikes, according to medics, at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

The Israeli military has ordered residents of Gaza City to evacuate south before launching an airstrike that destroyed a high-rise tower in the city’s western district. The strike, part of an intensified campaign to seize control of Gaza’s largest urban center, comes amid weeks of heavy bombardment and ground advances through surrounding neighborhoods.

Military officials claimed the building was used by Hamas for intelligence gathering and had explosive devices planted nearby, though no evidence was provided. Palestinian sources and humanitarian groups say the tower was sheltering displaced families, many of whom had already fled multiple times during the nearly two-year war.

The evacuation orders directed civilians toward a designated “humanitarian zone” in Khan Younis, where Israel says food, medical care, and shelter will be available. Aid agencies, however, warn that such areas have been repeatedly bombed in the past and lack adequate infrastructure to support the influx of people.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported at least 23 Palestinians killed on Saturday, including 13 in the Gaza City area, as strikes continued across the enclave. The United Nations has urged that any evacuations be voluntary and that civilians be allowed to return when conditions permit.

This latest assault underscores the mounting humanitarian crisis, with residents facing the impossible choice of staying under bombardment or risking perilous journeys south.
