“King of Storms” Ragasa Puts Hong Kong on Lockdown

Hong Kong is on high alert as Super Typhoon Ragasa, the world’s most powerful tropical cyclone of 2025, barrels toward the city after devastating the northern Philippines. Dubbed the “King of Storms” by Chinese meteorologists, Ragasa has already unleashed winds exceeding 260 km/h, equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane, before slightly weakening as it entered the South China Sea.

Authorities have raised the city’s highest storm warning, urging residents to stay indoors as destructive winds, torrential rain, and storm surges threaten coastal areas. Supermarkets have been stripped bare by panic buying, schools and businesses are closed, and hundreds of flights have been suspended at Hong Kong International Airport, marking one of the longest shutdowns in its history.

The Hong Kong Observatory warns that water levels could rise by up to two meters, with the risk of flooding in low-lying districts. Officials compare Ragasa’s potential impact to Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018, which caused billions in damage across the region.

Ragasa is expected to skirt just south of Hong Kong before making landfall in Guangdong Province, China, later this week. Forecasters caution that while the storm is gradually weakening, it remains a severe threat to millions across southern China.
