The proposal, backed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, is designed to curb irregular sea crossings by restricting access to Italian territorial waters. The draft law would allow officials to bar vessels from entering for up to 30 days, with the option to extend the measure to six months if national security or public order is deemed at risk. Kyiv Government Headquarters Damaged in Russia’s Largest Air Assault of the War

Smoke rises after a Russian attack in Kyiv, Ukraine, Sept 7.

In a dramatic escalation of the conflict, Russia launched its largest aerial attack on Ukraine since the war began, striking the heart of Kyiv and damaging the nation’s main government building for the first time.

According to Ukrainian officials, the overnight assault involved more than 800 drones and 13 missiles, with strikes hitting multiple cities, including Odesa, Kryvyi Rih, and Dnipro. In Kyiv, the Cabinet of Ministers building — which houses the prime minister’s office and other ministries — sustained damage to its roof and upper floors, sparking a fire in the historic Pecherskyi district.

The attack left at least two people dead, including an infant, and injured more than a dozen others. Residential buildings in the Sviatoshynskyi and Darnytskyi districts were also hit, with several floors destroyed or set ablaze.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko condemned the strike, calling it a “massive attack” and urging the international community to strengthen sanctions against Russian oil and gas. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the assault as a “deliberate crime” and renewed calls for enhanced air defense systems.

The unprecedented scale of the strike — surpassing previous record attacks — underscores growing fears of a prolonged and intensifying air campaign against Ukraine.
