Lisbon Mourns as Probe Begins into Deadly Funicular Crash

Portuguese authorities have launched a full investigation into the derailment of Lisbon’s historic Glória funicular, which left 17 people dead and more than 20 injured. The accident occurred on Wednesday evening when one of the two carriages, travelling down the steep 265-metre slope between Restauradores Square and the Bairro Alto district, left the tracks and slammed into a building.

Witnesses described the carriage accelerating uncontrollably, with some passengers in the second car leaping from windows to escape. Officials have not confirmed the cause, but early reports point to a possible snapped cable or brake failure. The city’s transport operator, Carris, insists all maintenance protocols had been followed, including daily inspections.

Victims include both Portuguese citizens and foreign nationals from countries such as Germany, Spain, Canada, and South Korea. Five people remain in critical condition. Flags are flying at half-mast across Portugal during a national day of mourning, while the city has suspended its other funicular lines pending safety checks.

The Glória funicular, in service since 1885 and classified as a national monument, is both a tourist attraction and a vital link for residents in Lisbon’s hilly centre. Now, it stands at the heart of one of the country’s deadliest urban transport tragedies in decades.
