Nepal Appoints First Female Interim Prime Minister Amid Turmoil, Sets March 2026 Elections

 

Newly sworn-in interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, arrives at a hospital to meet the victims of Monday’s deadly anti-corruption protests, in Kathmandu.

Nepal has entered a new political chapter after President Ramchandra Paudel dissolved parliament and scheduled fresh elections for March 5, 2026, following a week of violent unrest that left at least 51 people dead.

The upheaval, driven largely by Gen Z-led anti-corruption protests, began over a controversial social media ban but quickly evolved into a broader movement against political nepotism and economic inequality. Demonstrators set fire to government buildings, including parliament, and forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign on September 9.

In a historic move, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, 73, was sworn in as Nepal’s first woman prime minister to lead an interim government. Known for her strong anti-corruption stance during her tenure as chief justice, Karki’s appointment came after intense negotiations between the president, army chief, and protest leaders.

The military, which imposed a strict curfew during the unrest, has begun easing restrictions as the capital, Kathmandu, shows signs of returning to normalcy. However, political uncertainty remains high, with critics calling the dissolution of parliament “unconstitutional” and warning of further instability before the March polls.
