Rising Tensions Leave Ships Stranded in Key Oil Passage

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz was closed for a fourth day on Tuesday, choking off a key artery accounting for about 20% of global oil and gas supply. Greece’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, has raised urgent concerns over an increasingly alarming situation in the Strait of Hormuz, where dozens of vessels remain stranded amid escalating conflict involving Iran. He emphasized the need to safeguard global shipping and protect seafarers as the strategic waterway—responsible for roughly 20% of global oil and gas flows—remains closed for a fourth consecutive day.  The closure has disrupted international trade routes and heightened anxiety across the maritime sector. Greek authorities have urged shipowners to exercise maximum caution and avoid high‑risk zones in the wider Persian Gulf region as tensions continue to rise. Poland Downs Russian Drones in Historic NATO First, Heightening War Fears

A man rides a bicycle as soldiers patrol the street after a drone or similar object struck a residential building following violations of Polish airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine, in Wyryki municipality, Poland.

Poland has shot down multiple Russian drones that violated its airspace overnight, marking the first time NATO forces have destroyed Russian military assets over alliance territory since the start of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as a “large-scale provocation” and warned that the risk of a major military conflict is now “closer than at any time since the Second World War”. The drones entered Poland during a massive Russian aerial assault on Ukraine, prompting Warsaw to scramble F-16s alongside Dutch F-35s and place air defenses on maximum alert.

Authorities temporarily closed Warsaw’s Chopin Airport and advised residents in eastern regions to shelter indoors. NATO allies, including the Netherlands and Italy, assisted in the operation, which ended with at least three drones destroyed.

European leaders condemned the incursion as an “unprecedented violation” of NATO airspace, with calls to increase military readiness and raise the cost for Moscow. Russia has denied intentionally targeting Poland, but the incident has intensified fears of direct confrontation between NATO and Russia.

This escalation comes amid ongoing heavy strikes on Ukraine, with Kyiv warning that the drone attack on Poland was “likely not an accident” and could set a dangerous precedent for Europe’s security.
