Putin Proposes One-Year Extension of Nuclear Arms Treaty to Trump

Vladimir Putin meets with service members and inspects equipment as he arrives to observe the Russia-Belarus joint military exercises in the Nizhny Novgorod region, Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered U.S. President Donald Trump a temporary extension of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), the last remaining nuclear arms control pact between the two nations.

The proposal would extend the treaty’s limits on deployed strategic nuclear warheads and delivery systems by one year, provided Washington agrees to the same terms. The New START treaty, signed in 2010, is set to expire on February 5, 2026.

Putin described the move as a step to preserve global stability and prevent a new arms race, while also creating space for negotiations on a longer-term successor agreement. “We are ready to extend the treaty by one year in the interests of global non-proliferation,” he said during a meeting of Russia’s Security Council.

The offer comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO, with Moscow warning it will “respond to any strategic threats” while still signaling openness to dialogue.

For Trump, who has previously voiced concern about the treaty’s expiration, the proposal presents both an opportunity to maintain nuclear limits and a challenge to balance U.S. security interests with broader geopolitical tensions.
