Quebec has ordered the immediate removal of approximately 1,200 Lion Electric school buses from service following a fire on one of the vehicles in Montreal earlier this week. The incident, which occurred while five children and a driver were on board, resulted in no injuries thanks to a swift evacuation.

Provincial Education Minister Sonia LeBel and Transport Minister Jonatan Julien said the decision was a precautionary measure after a suspected defect was identified. Inspections will be carried out over the weekend to ensure the fleet’s safety, with alternative transportation arrangements offered to affected families if needed.

Lion Electric, working alongside Transport Canada, confirmed that the fire was not linked to the bus’s battery or propulsion system. Preliminary findings point to a wiring issue in the heating system. This marks the third fire involving a Lion Electric school bus since late 2024, though none have caused injuries.

The province aims to return the buses to service as soon as inspections are complete, with some expected back on the road early next week.
