Ravenna Dockworkers Halt Arms Transit to Israel Amid Nationwide Protests

The Italian Adriatic port of Ravenna has refused entry to two trucks reportedly carrying explosives bound for Israel, intensifying a wave of dockworker-led protests against the war in Gaza. Mayor Alessandro Barattoni said the move, backed by the regional government, was aimed at closing “bureaucratic loopholes” that allow foreign arms to pass through Italy despite an official ban on direct sales.

The action aligns Ravenna with similar port blockades in France, Sweden, and Greece, as unions escalate pressure on Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government to suspend all military and commercial ties with Israel, lift the humanitarian embargo, and recognise Palestine.

Italy’s largest trade union, CGIL, will stage a national half-day strike and marches in multiple cities on Friday, while ports in Genoa and Livorno are set for shutdowns on September 22. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani signalled support for potential EU sanctions on violent Israeli settlers and ministers over “unacceptable” remarks on Gaza and the West Bank.
