Carney’s First Budget Signals a Generational Reset for Canada’s Finances

Prime Minister Mark Carney jokes with Minister of Finance and National Revenue Francois-Philippe Champagne as they greet families before participating in an announcement at a community centre in Ottawa, on Friday, Oct. 10, 2025. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s inaugural budget is being framed as a turning point in Canada’s fiscal direction, marking a sharp departure from the spending patterns of recent years . Presented alongside Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, the budget is not just a financial document but a statement of intent: to reshape the country’s economic priorities in the face of global uncertainty and domestic pressures. Romania and Ukraine Join Forces on Drone Production to Bolster NATO’s Eastern Defenses

Romania has announced plans to launch joint production of defensive drones with Ukraine in a move aimed at strengthening NATO’s eastern flank amid rising security concerns. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu confirmed that discussions with Kyiv began prior to recent airspace incursions in the region, which NATO allies have largely attributed to Russia.

The initiative will see drones manufactured in Romania for domestic use, as well as for European Union and NATO partners. Officials emphasized that the collaboration is designed to accelerate the creation of a “drone wall” — a coordinated defense system across Eastern Europe to counter aerial threats.

Ukraine, which has rapidly advanced its drone technology on the battlefield, will provide combat-tested expertise, while Romania contributes production capacity under the EU’s SAFE defense program. The project is part of a broader €16.6 billion package allocated to Romania for military modernization, including air defense systems and expanded NATO infrastructure.

The move underscores NATO’s growing focus on air defense as Russian drones and aircraft continue to test allied airspace. By combining resources, Romania and Ukraine aim to deliver a faster, more cost-effective response to evolving threats, while reinforcing the security of Europe’s eastern frontier.
