Negotiators from Russia and Ukraine convened in Geneva for a new round of U.S.-mediated peace talks, with territorial disputes emerging as the central point of contention. Romania Scrambles Jets After Russian Drone Breaches NATO Airspace

F-16 aircraft detected a Russian drone in Romanian airspace, while monitoring the country's border with Ukraine.

Romania has accused Russia of violating its airspace after a military drone crossed the border from Ukraine during a wave of Russian strikes on September 13. According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, two F-16 fighter jets were dispatched to monitor the unmanned aircraft, which was detected about 20 kilometers southwest of the village of Chilia Veche before disappearing from radar.

Officials confirmed the drone did not fly over populated areas and posed no immediate threat to civilians. However, Romanian Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Țoiu condemned the incursion as “unacceptable and reckless,” vowing to take all necessary measures to protect national sovereignty.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed the drone penetrated roughly 10 kilometers into Romanian territory and remained in NATO airspace for nearly 50 minutes, calling it a deliberate expansion of the war. The incident comes just days after Poland reported shooting down multiple Russian drones in its own airspace, raising fresh concerns over the security of NATO’s eastern flank.

Romania, a NATO and EU member sharing a 400-mile border with Ukraine, has experienced repeated drone-related incidents since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022, including debris falling on its territory. NATO allies have pledged continued vigilance in response to what they describe as escalating provocations.
