Russia Rejects Estonia’s Airspace Violation Claim Amid Rising NATO Tensions

A Russian MIG-31 jet flying above the Baltic Sea after violating Estonian airspace, September 19, 2025.

Russia has strongly denied Estonia’s accusation that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated its airspace last week, dismissing the claim as baseless and politically motivated.

Estonia reported that the jets entered its territory without permission for 12 minutes before being forced to withdraw. Western officials suggested the incident was a deliberate test of NATO’s readiness, coming just days after Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov rejected the allegation, saying Tallinn had provided no “objective monitoring data” to support its claim. He accused Estonia of escalating tensions and provoking confrontation, while stressing that Russian pilots operate in strict accordance with international law.

The dispute has drawn international attention, with the United Nations Security Council set to discuss the matter and NATO members preparing consultations under Article 4 of the alliance’s charter. The episode underscores heightened anxieties in Eastern Europe as the war in Ukraine continues to reverberate across the region.
