Market Jitters Return as Cooler CPI Surprises Wall Street

A softer‑than‑expected U.S. Consumer Price Index reading sent a ripple through financial markets today, creating an unusual dynamic: good news on inflation, but renewed pressure on major stock indexes. A Cooling CPI, but a Nervous Market The latest CPI report showed inflation easing more than economists anticipated. Under normal circumstances, that would be a welcome sign—suggesting the Federal Reserve may have more room to consider rate cuts later in the year. But markets don’t always behave logically in the moment. Today, the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq all slipped as investors reassessed what the data means for corporate earnings, interest‑rate expectations, and the broader economic outlook. Sliced Justice: Canadians Can Now Claim Their Share of $500M Bread Price-Fixing Settlement

Canadians who purchased packaged bread between 2001 and 2021 may now be eligible for compensation from a historic $500 million settlement in the Loblaw bread price-fixing case. The class-action lawsuit, which accused Loblaw Companies Ltd. and its parent company George Weston Ltd. of conspiring to inflate bread prices for over a decade, has resulted in one of the largest antitrust settlements in Canadian history.

The claims process is now open, and the best part? No receipts are required. If you lived in Canada on December 31, 2021, and bought packaged bread from Loblaw-banner stores like No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, or Your Independent Grocer, you can file a claim online. Quebec residents have a separate claims portal, and both courts in Ontario and Quebec have approved the deal.

While the exact payout per person is still unclear, it will depend on how many valid claims are submitted. If you previously received a $25 Loblaw gift card through the 2018 Loblaw Card Program, that amount will be deducted from your share. And if your calculated payout is under $5, you won’t receive anything.

To file a claim, visit CanadianBreadSettlement.ca or QuebecBreadSettlement.ca depending on your province. The deadline to apply hasn’t been announced yet, but early action is encouraged.

This settlement marks a significant moment in consumer justice, offering Canadians a chance to reclaim a slice of what they overpaid for a staple product.
