Spain’s Shorter Workweek Bid Collapses Amid Political Turmoil



Spain’s lower house has rejected a proposal to cut the standard workweek from 40 to 37.5 hours, marking another setback for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s fragile Socialist-led minority government.

The bill, championed by Labour Minister Yolanda Díaz and backed by major trade unions, aimed to reduce working hours by half an hour per day for millions of workers. However, it was blocked in a 178–170 vote after the conservative Partido Popular, far-right Vox, and pro-independence Catalan party Junts united against it.

Opponents argued the measure would burden small businesses and farmers with higher costs, risking job losses and harming the economy. Díaz condemned Junts’ veto as “incomprehensible” and vowed to reintroduce the legislation.

The defeat underscores the government’s struggle to pass key reforms in a deeply fragmented parliament. With a long-overdue budget still pending and corruption scandals eroding public trust, Sánchez faces mounting political pressure ahead of crucial legislative battles later this year.
