Sudan’s Marra Mountains Landslide Wipes Out Entire Village, Leaving Just One Survivor



A catastrophic landslide has obliterated the remote village of Tarasin in Sudan’s Marra Mountains, killing more than 1,000 people and leaving only a single survivor. Triggered by days of relentless heavy rain on August 31, the disaster buried the community under massive torrents of mud and debris, flattening it completely.

The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), which controls the area, described the event as “massive and devastating” and has urgently appealed to the United Nations and international aid agencies for help in recovering bodies and delivering humanitarian relief. Access to the site is severely hampered by the region’s rugged terrain, ongoing civil conflict, and the rainy season, which has made roads nearly impassable.

Many of the victims were war-displaced civilians who had sought refuge in the Marra Mountains to escape fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The African Union has called on all warring parties to “silence the guns” to allow aid to reach survivors and affected communities.

This tragedy, one of the deadliest natural disasters in Sudan’s recent history, underscores the compounded toll of conflict, displacement, and climate-driven extreme weather on vulnerable populations.
