Market Jitters Return as Cooler CPI Surprises Wall Street

A softer‑than‑expected U.S. Consumer Price Index reading sent a ripple through financial markets today, creating an unusual dynamic: good news on inflation, but renewed pressure on major stock indexes. A Cooling CPI, but a Nervous Market The latest CPI report showed inflation easing more than economists anticipated. Under normal circumstances, that would be a welcome sign—suggesting the Federal Reserve may have more room to consider rate cuts later in the year. But markets don’t always behave logically in the moment. Today, the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq all slipped as investors reassessed what the data means for corporate earnings, interest‑rate expectations, and the broader economic outlook. Ted Cruz Denounces FCC Threats, Defends Free Speech in Rare GOP Split

In a striking departure from party lines, Senator Ted Cruz has publicly condemned recent threats by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr against U.S. broadcasters, calling the actions “dangerous as hell” and likening them to mafia-style intimidation.

Carr, appointed by President Donald Trump, had threatened regulatory action—including fines and license revocations—against networks airing “Jimmy Kimmel Live” following the host’s controversial monologue about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. ABC, owned by Disney, subsequently suspended the show, and several local affiliates dropped it altogether.

Cruz, who chairs the Senate Commerce Committee overseeing the FCC, joined Democrats and civil rights groups in criticizing Carr’s remarks. On his podcast, Cruz mocked Carr’s tone, saying it resembled a gangster from Goodfellas: “Nice bar you have here. It would be a shame if something happened to it”.

The senator’s rebuke underscores growing bipartisan concern over government overreach and threats to free speech. “We shouldn’t be threatening government power to force him off air,” Cruz warned. “It might feel good right now to threaten Jimmy Kimmel, but when it is used to silence every conservative in America, we will regret it”.

President Trump, however, defended Carr and reiterated his belief that critical broadcasters act as extensions of the Democratic Party, suggesting their licenses should be reconsidered.

Cruz’s stance marks a rare moment of dissent within Republican ranks, spotlighting the tension between party loyalty and constitutional principles.
